First training session today! We spent about 2 hours talking with the trainer about the methods we’ll be using, the homework we’ll be doing, and the reasons we’re doing it. The theme for this week seems to be getting Heidi to learn how to relax herself, without our aid.
Heidi growled at the trainer at first, but by the end of the session she was lying down and chill. I can’t tell if it was due to the 80ºF weather or that she truly felt relaxed around a stranger. It helped that the trainer was constantly throwing treats.
Practiced walking around in the backyard with Heidi following mindlessly. She was okay, pretty distracted. We only did this for about 7 minutes. Near the end, she was better about following along. She never insisted on staying in one spot.
Wait and reward
Then we spent 10-15 minutes standing in the shade and rewarding whenever Heidi sat or laid down. At first, she only sat. About halfway through, she started lying down.
We sat ourselves down on the couch in the living room for this exercise. We were warned that a worst case scenario could take around 2 hours for her to fall asleep. We prepared for the worst.
Time it took to fall asleep: 1.5 minutes
It’s barely the evening, so who knows how things will be tomorrow. But I’ll mark this up as a great start to her future as a calmer and more relaxed dog.
